The question of “ what is the most important subject or skill the schoolsshould teach? ” has never failed to attract attention from educators, schooladministrators and even politicians especially when it comes to subjects liketechnology, engineering and math. Some argue that students should be encouragedto take such classes rather than the ones they are interested in since they givethem a better shot to find jobs. However, personally, I am not in favor of thisposition based on the following reasons.
Admittedly, it is true that courses like technology, engineering and mathare very
technical, most of which can be applied in solving real world issues. However, the exposure that students have to apply these theories are verylimited in class. Taking technical oriented classes will not give students acompetitive edge to ensure future jobs opportunities, on the other hand, thereare enormous benefits for students to take courses that they are interestedin.
First off, taking courses that students are interested in can be a greatmotivation for them to achieve higher goals. Old saying “ interest is the bestteacher” remains relevant as it did a century ago. Interest serves as theinternal motivation for students to explore in the area that they areinterested, on the contrary, if they are forced to take courses for autilitarian purpose, they might not keep their interest for a long time thushave a lower learning efficiency. Recent study conducted by the Society ofDevelopmental Psychology shows that students will be more enthusiastic andpassionate about learning when given the freedom to make their own choices totake classes. Also, giving students the opportunity to choose the classes theyare interested in can help them to explore their real interest, thus theirpotential can be fully tapped before heading off for career options.
Additionally, taking courses students are interested in have enormouspractical purposes and they can be a great source of leisure and relaxation. Forinstance, lots of students like art and music but seldom do they have a chanceto learn. Actually, taking art and music classes help to develop creativity andmake the students more imaginative. Actually, lots of scientific research in thepsychological field shows that early exposure to art and music not only boostsacademic achievement but also promotes creativity, self-confidence and schoolpride. Students who spend more time in learning art and music end up havinghigher analytical thinking and reasoning skills than those who don’t.
In conclusion, taking courses that students are interested in can be agreat motivation for them to achieve higher goals and it can also be a greatsource of leisure and relaxation.
写作参考二:
Under the current system of higher education, with the majors becomingincreasingly diverse, how to choose an appropriate major has never failed toattract the attention of the general public. Most parents strongly recommendthat it is much better to choose a major which can guarantee a good job, whilecollege students, the receiver of higher education, tend to choose the fieldwhich caters to their interest. As far as I am concerned, the latter viewpointis more reasonable, with the reasons listed below.
First of all, selecting the major that students like can help them to graspthe knowledge better. Just as a saying goes, interest is the best teacher, whichis true of undergraduates. To illustrate, under the drive of interest, studentsare more likely to automatically devote more time and energy into what theymajor in, thus definitely having a better command of professional knowledge andskills imparted by teachers. By contrast, without any interest in what they aretaught, college students who generally lack in self-motivation may do anythingbut study in class. For instance, on campus in China, it is not uncommon to seethat many students squander their valuable time by taking a nap, whispering oreven playing smart phones while attending the class. What’s worse, some of themmay even skip classes. The reason underlying the above phenomenon is nothing butlack of passion for what they learn.
Secondly, choosing a major students are interested in can do a better jobin helping them secure a good job. As we all know, with the constant change andprogress of society, the job market is also changing quickly. In other words, some promising industries a few years ago might very well become obsolete, whichmeans that the major one chooses cannot necessarily guarantee a good job. Bycontrast, under such a society full of fierce competition, it is theprofessional skills and abilities people own that play the key role in landing adecent job. Obviously, only when people select the field they have passion forcan they establish a solid foundation of specific knowledge and skills in thisfield. Therefore, the major catering to one’s interest can better improve his orher competence, thus increasing their likelihood of securing a decent job.
Taking all the above into consideration, we can draw the conclusion thatchoosing the major which interests students is much better, in terms of makingundergraduates have a better command of what they major in and find a suitablejob.
托福考试作文独立写作范文:通过别人喜欢的书或电影了解一个人
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: One can learn a lotabout another person from the books and the movies that the person likes.
范文参考:
Spending a significant amount of time with someone is necessary to get toknow their personalities and temperaments. Sometimes, people can also tell aperson’s quality and determine his or her personality by analyzing theirbehaviors. When it comes to the question of whether one can learn about anotherperson from the books or movies that the person likes, I personally am in favorof this statement based on the following reasons.
First off, by judging from the books or movies or even TV programs thatsomeone like we can tell a person’s interests and hobbies, consequently we canlearn more about them. For example, My roommate back in college was really intoauto magazines, TV shows and even movies featuring fancy sports cars. At first,I didn’t know him so well to know his hobbies and interests, however, I was sureat that time that he must have been a big fan of cars. Indeed, my judgment wasright and he was a car freak, he likes all kinds of vehicles like sedan, SUV,recreational vehicles, etc. It is not an exaggeration to claim that he can tellnot only the brand but also the version of a specific vehicle by just checkingout the picture of the cockpit of the car. Ultimately, we can tell a person’shobbies by the movies and books they like.
Additionally, the genre of the books that someone reads says a lot aboutthe person’s character and temperament. Actually, it is natural for someone toshape their characters just because the characters in the novels or movies havea dramatic impact on the person’s behavior and attitude, regardless of the typesof the characters like fairy, alien or someone with superpower. For instance, girls who read a lot of romantic novels like Gone With the Wind might be veryemotional and very committed to someone they love. For someone who read sciencefiction novels or watch movies featuring future events and exploration of outerspace tend to be very creative and willing to take risks, to be more specific, they might be someone who friends can depend on when they got stuck in some sortof exploration.
For someone who likes to read classics of all times like the works by JaneAusten or Ernest Hemingway, they tend to cherish the simplicities andtrivialities in lives.
In a nutshell, by judging from the genre of the book that someone reads, not only can we tell a lot about the person’s interests and hobbies but also theperson's character and temperament.
