有的人谈“to”色变 ， 因为它的“双面性” ， 有的人谈“the”迷惑 ， 因为有时上下文缺失；除非是明确的或独一无二的存在等之外 ， 在上下文不明确的情形之下 ， the 的特指就显得模棱两可 ， 因为听话者不知道你的所指 ， 如 of the moment.
基于我们对这个世界的认知 ， 地球是世界上独一无二的存在 ， 因此我们可以在脱离具体的上下文中直接使用 the earth 而不造成指代不明 ， 例如：
The earth revolves around the sun.
地球绕着太阳转 。
然而在具体的上下文中 ， the earth 却不一定指的是独一无二的地球 ， 它还可以表示陆地或地面等 ， 此时的 the earth 就是特指 ， 那么必须有具体的上下文 ， 例如：
After a week at sea it was good to feel the earth beneath our feet again.
出海一周后 ， 重新踏上陆地感到很愉快 。

上句中的 the earth 特指的是我们脚下的陆地 ， 而不是地球 ， 其中 beneath our feet 是 the earth 的上下文 ， 如果没有这个上下文 ， 那么 the earth 就有可能指代不明 。

我因过于激动而开始胡说八道 。
We are able to get through the winter for the moment.
我们暂时能够熬过冬天 。

像 of the moment 这样没有明确上下文的特指很常见 ， 所指的都是大家共识的事物或所共同处于的时空 ， 又如 of the day 可以特指当今或当天 ， of the year 可以特指本年度 ， 等等；例如：
Pessimism seems to be the order of the day.
悲观失望似乎是当今司空见惯的情形 。
那么没有定冠词的 of moment 肯定不是指什么特定的时刻 。 当 moment 表示时间时是一个可数名词 ， 表示很短的一段时间 ， 因此我们可以说 a moment 或 moments 等 ， 例如：
He hesitated for a moment before answering the phone.
他犹豫了一会儿才接电话 。
它常用在一些短语中 ， 表示短暂的时间 ， 如 in a moment ， at any moment 或 wait a moment 等等 ， 例如：
Hurry up and wipe up the mess! Our mum will be back at any moment now.
快点把这些乱七八糟的东西擦干净！我们的妈妈现在随时都会回来 。

然而 of moment 中的 moment 却跟时间没关系 ， 此时它被当作不可数名词使用 ， 相当于 importance ， 意为“重要的” ， 也常用作 of great moment ， 因此在实际应用中要跟 of the moment 的意思区分开来 ， 例如：
Decisions of moment must be made by our government.
正确：重要的决定必须由我们的政府作出 。
错误：目前的决定必须由我们的政府作出 。 How to tackle the shared challenging is an issue of great moment for every country on the planet.
正确：如何应对共同的挑战是地球上每个国家都面临的重大问题 。
